Having never travelled on a plane until I was 18, in 2007 I took a Gap Year before starting University. I volunteered in Fiji for the Red Cross as a Health Education Officer working in Schools, Hospitals and Community Centres.

We did workshops on Hand Hygiene, First Aid, Smoking, Alcohol Awareness and created the only Puppet theatre in the South Pacific to help the kids understand the benefits of healthy living and promote disease prevention. My favourite character was the Tobacco Terminator, with his red cape and TT symbol on his chest.

I do however have a phobia of fish – they’re so creepy. The eyes, the mouth, the scales – not good. So the island diet was not my favourite – I stuck to the Fruit and root veg. So don’t talk to me about fish if you’re in with me for treatment!

Having caught the travelling bug, A year later I went out to Camp America in New York State – Long Island.  Technically I wasn’t allowed any alcohol, so don’t ask me about making a Long Island Iced Tea – I don’t know!

In my second year I organised a Work Placement with a Collegiate American Football team at Portland State University, Oregon. In the Sports Medicine Department I learnt how to cope with the demands of 90 athletes after their pre-season training session – 6 days per week, 14 hour days prioritising, delegating and managing their First Aid requirements.

The most interesting injury I treated was an ACL, MCL and LCL injury sustained in a collision. There was several weeks of pre-surgical rehab – 30-60 minute sessions, 3 to 4 times per day. Treatments consisted of guided exercise programmes, electrotherapy and manual therapy. It opened my eyes to the intensity and frequency of rehab but the amazing benefits of regular, prescribed treatment.

I also saw lots of shoulder injuries – contact injuries and repetitive strain injuries were both common. You can read about my case study of a Quarterback’s Rehabilitation to understand what’s involved in Elite Sport Rehab.

I still love travelling, particularly to Europe and the Middle East. I’m also a Rugby Union fan and love nothing more than spending a weekend following Leicester Tigers. So if you’re a rugby fan who loves travelling to Europe to watch Leicester Tigers win the European Cup, then we’ll have a great chat during your treatment.
