Pilates is an exercise-based treatment that can be used to help:
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. The Pilates principle is designed to work the entire body, with particular focus on improving spinal strength and stability to allow selective, controlled movements of the spine and improve toning of all muscle groups.
Our Pilates instructors are physiotherapists trained in Modified Pilates by the APPI (the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute). This allows them to combine their skills as a clinician and instructor to design individual programmes to address lumbo-pelvic instability and run classes with focussed benefits for our clients.
See our class timetable to find out when our next Pilates Class is taking place.
One-to-One tuition is also offered at the clinic, in which one of our pilates trained physiotherapists will guide you through the process to ensure you follow the correct techniques. Your physiotherapist can also target areas of weakness that need special attention and provide a bespoke programme to address your individual needs.
Low Back Pain affects 80-90% of people within their lifetime. Of these people, over 60% will have a recurrence within a 3-12 month period.
It has been shown that pain alters normal movement patterns with inhibition (switching off) of the inner core muscles. It causes large muscle over activity to attempt to protect the region affected and reduces our ability to recognise how our joints and soft tissue are being positioned. From this, we lose the ability to control individual segments of the spine resulting in increased pain, muscle atrophy (wasting) and our ability to undertake our normal activities is affected.
Unfortunately, the recovery of these systems is not automatic and requires a specific rehabilitation and treatment process to promote effective recovery.
Regular muscle retraining of the deep abdominal lumbar and pelvic muscles encourages improved control of the back and pelvis. It helps to avoid unwanted outer abdominal muscle activity reducing large muscle spasm, improving comfort and improving muscle memory within the area.
APPI Pilates has been shown to effectively retrain the deep abdominal and spinal muscles that become weak with a spinal injury. It reconditions the body from the central core to prevent the recurrence of and treat a range of postural, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
We have Plates rehab sessions to suit everyone's requirements, but please contact us if you would like to know more.

"After 1 session with David my back was feeling 90% better and was discharged within just 2 sessions. I was really pleased with my recovery and have recommended loads of my family and friends to get their aches and pains sorted."
Donna Hudson – Eccleshill, Bradford
"I attended C-Physio with niggling pain in my back that just wasn’t shifting after an intensive Army PT assessment. David immediately assessed my back with a range of movements and tests that I was able to manage surprisingly well. It wasn’t until he started to really investigate that we found I had a deep muscle strain that was only coming on with certain movements. He got hands-on and was able to get rid of the pain instantly! I was given some exercises to do at home that really helped to fix my pain and within 4 weeks my core’s stronger now than when I started. I go off to start my Army Basic Training in a few weeks and I feel ready to tackle it head on thanks to David’s treatment and the exercises he gave me."
Joseph Grieff – Clayton, Bradford
